What is Self-Defence?

Self-Defence is the ability to reduce your risk of vulnerability towards situations of conflict, physically maintain your safety using Reasonable Force, and support a rapid escape’ (SSD Ltd).

We provide one day BTEC Level 3 Instructed Self Defence Courses to teach the physical skills to protect yourself, as well as incorporating knowledge relating to the law that governs the Use of Force, reacting to fight, flight, and freeze responses, and show, with evidence, what you are physically capable of doing under stress.

Learning Self-Defence is a very worthwhile undertaking for developing personal safety, and the rewards are confidence in your ability, and self-esteem and self-worth development. As Instructors, we show individuals how to physically defend themselves, their family and friends, and protect their property.

Following much research, we identified qualification under NFPS Ltd, with over 23 years of experience in their field, as being the most effective, up to date, and supportive instructor training providers. Every person we support on our courses are treated as individuals with the utmost confidentiality, and adjustments are made to support and enhance a person’s ability to get the most from their efforts.

The key to Self-Defence is to make you as safe possible, as quickly as possible, and escape the situation.

5 reasons why you should learn Self-Defence with us:

There are many reasons to learn Self-Defence skills but we regard the following 5 reasons as the most important. Samantha explains these reasons in the video below.

  1. Learn the PHYSICAL SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES to deal with a violent or potentially violent situation. Learn how to MINIMISE THE RISK OF VULNERABILITY TO CONFLICT SITUATIONS, and how to weigh up quickly your ROUTES OF ESCAPE.
  2. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.’ Understand the legislation that governs the use of force allowing you to react effectively and remain within lawful boundaries.
  3. FIGHT, FLIGHT, FREEZE.’ Understand how your body and mind reacts during high states of high arousal and stress, allowing you to effectively act to maintain your safety.
  4. DEVELOP YOUR CONFIDENCE AND SELF-ESTEEM. We understand the anxiety you may have about attending courses, but we lead our courses in a very positive manner, with a relaxed atmosphere, that allows you the support to become confident in your ability. Confidence develops self-esteem and positive self worth.
  5. TEACH ONE, TEACH MANY. GAIN A BTEC LEVEL 2 QUALIFICATION. We train with, and are licensed under, The National Federation of Personal Safety (NFPS Ltd), and Mark Dawes (Director), with over 23 years experience in this sector, has developed and produced the only Self-Defence course that carries a BTEC qualification. This qualification allows you to teach your loved ones and friends the skills and knowledge you learned on your course.

We present easy to understand information, discuss issues related to bullying, what to do and who to speak to if they are exploited, keeping safe online, and the physical skills and techniques to keep themselves safe. We allow young people to lead discussions, and help them to problem solve. We value their opinions, ideas, and feedback. They are the future. • TRAUMA SENSITIVE SELF-DEFENCE COURSES. Crisis support and survivor organisations, and support charities. We specialise these training courses with emphasis on victims of sexual and domestic abuse. We adjusted our approach to self-defence courses, in this regard, to safely provide instruction that limits further trauma. Every person we support on our courses are treated as individuals with the utmost confidentiality, and adjustments are made to provide trauma limited specific ways to train, as well as providing gender specific instructors. This type of course is very ‘close to home’ for us as Samantha is a survivor of sexual abuse. Because of this we wanted to set up the provision of courses to teach people with a history of sexual and domestic trauma how to effectively protect themselves, and who otherwise may not have the confidence to attend such courses. Samantha is very active and you can view her blog and Facebook pages online. This category carries a BTEC Level 2 Qualification certificate and a ‘SSD Personal Safety’ badge.
  • TEAM BUILDING. Companies, Organisations, charities, and workforces. These courses support staff members who may need Self-Defence skills, or want to engage in a team building exercise that will enhance their development, and build solidarity. It is a great way to spend a day and will develop confidence and team spirit. This course incorporates, and allows for, group activities in law relating to the Use of Force, Health and Safety, and positive regard for each other. We provide presentations and discuss the law that governs the Use of Force, reacting to fight, flight, and freeze responses, and show, with evidence, what you are physically capable of doing under stress. We discuss issues such as domestic and sexual abuse and how to recognise it, online safety, mental health awareness, and the physical skills and techniques to keep themselves safe. We provide an active, but relaxed atmosphere and support staff members to work within, and enhance their abilities. This category carries a BTEC Level 2 Qualification Certificate. ‘SSD Personal Safety’ badges are also available on request.
